Late Holocene climatic changes caused a large scale regression of the Lake Chad shoreline followed by an expansion of settlements into previously unexplored territories. Numerous Final Stone Age sites of the Gajiganna Culture (1,800 to 800 b.c.) in the Lake Chad Basin (northeast Nigeria) yielded plant impressions in potsherds. The ceramics of Phase I (1,800–1,400 b.c.) were mineral tempered, and plant impressions, mainly of Paniceae, were caused only by incidental inclusion. In contrast, a considerable number of the sherds from Phase II (1,500–800 b.c.) were intentionally tempered with chaff derived from domesticated pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum), wild Paniceae and wild rice species (Oryza cf. barthii and O. cf. longistaminata). This plant spectrum suggests the exploitation of the wet wild areas, and also the cultivation of pearl millet on sandy soils. The evidence suggests that agricultural practices were established late and were introduced from elsewhere. During the time of seasonally occupied sites in Phase I, the subsistence strategy was based on herding, fishing, and gathering, while in Phase II there are signs of permanent settlements and agriculture. The evidence from the plant impressions indicates that in the Final Stone Age Gajiganna Culture around 1,000–800 b.c., pearl millet became well established while the gathering of wild millets and rice was still practised.*Klee et al.  An RFLP-based map consisting of 160 loci was constructed in an intervarietal cross of foxtail millet [Setaria italica (L.) P. Beauv.], Longgu 25×Pagoda Flower Green. The map comprises nine linkage groups, which were aligned with the nine foxtail millet chromosomes using trisomic lines, and spans 964 cM. The intraspecific map was compared to an interspecific map, constructed in a S. italica×S. viridis cross. Both the order of the markers and the genetic distances between the loci were highly conserved. Deviations from the expected 1 : 2 : 1 Mendelian segregation ratios were observed in both the intra- and inter-specific populations. The segregation data indicate that chromosome VIII in the Longgu 25×Pagoda Flower Green cross carries a gene that strongly affects gamete fertility. There have been no studies of the effects of soil P deficiency on pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.) photosynthesis, despite the fact that P deficiency is the major constraint to pearl millet production in most regions of West Africa. Because current photosynthesis-based crop simulation models do not explicitly take into account P deficiency effects on leaf photosynthesis, they cannot predict millet growth without extensive calibration. We studied the effects of soil addition on leaf P content, photosynthetic rate (A), and whole-plant dry matter production (DM) of non-water-stressed, 28 d pearl millet plants grown in pots containing 6.00 kg of a P-deficient soil. As soil P addition increased from 0 to 155.2 mg P kg–1 soil, leaf P content increased from 0.65 to 7.0 g kg–1. Both A and DM had maximal values near 51.7 mg P kg–1 soil, which corresponded to a leaf P content of 3.2 g kg–1. Within this range of soil P addition, the slope of A plotted against stomatal conductance (gs) tripled, and mean leaf internal CO2 concentration ([CO2]i) decreased from 260 to 92 L L–1, thus indicating that P deficiency limited A through metabolic dysfunction rather than stomatal regulation. Light response curves of A, which changed markedly with P leaf content, were modelled as a single substrate, Michaelis-Menten reaction, using quantum flux as the substrate for each level of soil P addition. An Eadie-Hofstee plot of light response data revealed that both KM, which is mathematically equivalent to quantum efficiency, and Vmax, which is the light-saturated rate of photosynthesis, increased sharply from leaf P contents of 0.6 to 3 g kg–1, with peak values between 4 and 5 g P kg–1. Polynomial equations relating KM and Vmax, to leaf P content offered a simple and attractive way of modelling photosynthetic light response for plants of different P status, but this approach is somewhat complicated by the decrease of leaf P content with ontogeny.  相似文献

Genetic variability in six host genotype-specific pathotypes of pearl millet downy mildew pathogen S. graminicola was studied at the molecular level using mini- and micro-satellites. Our results indicated that microsatellites (GAA)6, (GACA)4, and especially (GATA)4 were quite informative and showed high levels of polymorphism among the pathotypes. The six pathotypes could be classified into five groups based on the cluster analysis of their genetic similarities, thereby confirming the existence of distinct host genotype-specific virulence in S. graminicola pathotypes. We demonstrate, for the first time, the use of DNA fingerprinting to detect genetic variation in downy mildew fungus of pearl millet.  相似文献

Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for resistance to pathogen populations of Scelerospora graminicola from India, Nigeria, Niger and Senegal were mapped using a resistant x susceptible pearl millet cross. An RFLP map constructed using F2 plants was used to map QTLs for traits scored on F4 families. QTL analysis was carried out using the interval mapping programme Mapmaker/QTL. Independent inheritance of resistance to pathogen populations from India, Senegal, and populations from Niger and Nigeria was shown. These results demonstrate the existence of differing virulences in the pathogen populations from within Africa and between Africa and India. QTLs of large effect, contributing towards a large porportion of the variation in resistance, were consistently detected in repeated screens. QTLs of smaller and more variable effect were also detected. There was no QTLs that were effective against all four pathogen populations, demonstrating that pathotype-specific resistance is a major mechanism of downy mildew resistance in this cross. For all but one of the QTLs, resistance was inherited from the resistant parent and the inheritance of resistance tended to be the result of dominance or over-dominance. The implications of this research for pearl millet breeding are discussed.  相似文献

Summary During the years 1973 to 1976 two populations of Pearl millet with wide genetic base, namely, Delhi composite (DC) and Vijay composite (VC) were used to compare the response to selection by the full-sib family method from biparental material and reciprocal recurrent selection (RRS). The results indicated that it was possible to advance grain yield with one cycle of RRS by about 23 percent in the case of population DC and 21 percent in population VC, while for the full-sib selection method, the improvement in grain yield was not so rapid. The studies on the nature of gene action indicated that both additive and dominance gene actions were important for grain yield, ear length and ear girth. The coefficient of variation as a result of RRS was reduced in population DC, while it was comparable to base population in the other population. The correlation studies indicated that the magnitude of favourable correlation of different characters with grain yield were higher in case of RRS compared to the full-sib system. The presence of negative correlation of plant height with grain yield in both the improved populations indicated the possibility of breakage of unfavourable gene combinations through RRS and full-sibs developed from biparental mating.  相似文献

Millet, milo, soybean, crotalaria, and Norman pigeon pea were used in conjunction with clean fallow and a nematicide (fensulfothion) for managing nematode populations in the production of tomato transplants (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.). Glean fallow was the most effective treatment in suppressing nematode numbers. After 2 years in tomato, root-knot nematodes increased in numbers to damaging levels, and fallow was no longer effective for complete control even in conjunction with fensulfothion. After 4 years in tomato, none of the crops used as summer cover crops alone or in conjunction with fensulfothion reduced numbers of root-knot nematodes in harvested tomato transplants sufficiently to meet Georgia certification regulations. Milo supported large numbers of Macroposthonia ornata and Pratylenchus spp. and crotalaria supported large numbers of Pratylenchus spp. Millet, milo, soybean, crotalaria, and pigeon pea are poor choices for summer cover crops in sites used to produce tomato transplants, because they support large populations of root-knot and other potentially destructive nematodes.  相似文献

Summary Dwarf varieties have had virtually no impact on the production of pearl millet, in contrast to the case of wheat, rice, and sorghum. This research compared tall and dwarf near-isogenic F1 hybrids to attempt to determine if there were deleterious effects of the d 2 dwarfing gene that might account for the lack of release/cultivation of dwarf pearl millet cultivars. Dwarf isohybrids on average yielded less than the tails, because of a smaller average seed size combined with a similar grain number per unit area. There was, however, a larger contribution of background genetic variation (pollinator, male-sterile, and interaction effects) to hybrid variation for nearly all characters measured, including seed size, than there was of the dwarfing gene. Selection of dwarf parents capable of producing hybrids with equal seed size and yield to that of tall parents should not be difficult.Journal article no. 1469 of the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics, Patancheru, A.P. 502 324, India  相似文献

Summary Germ plasm from the A-genome of Pennisetum purpureum Schum. (AABB) of the secondary gene pool was transferred to cultivated pearl millet (AA) [P. glaucum (L.) R. Br.] by pollinating cytoplasmicnuclear male-sterile (cms) pearl millet with fertile allohexaploid pearl millet x P. purpureum hybrids (AAAABB). Certain allohexaploids used as pollinators on cms pearl millet resulted in 14-chromosome diploid pearl millet progenies. Three types of diploid pearl millet plants were produced in addition to the expected 28-chromosome AAAB-genome plants: (1) cms plants with only the A-genome, (2) cms plants with the A- and A-genomes, and (3) fertile plants with the A- and A-genomes. The latter group has allowed the utilization of genes for fertility restoration, stiff stalk, maturity, height, and morphological characteristics from the A-genome of P. purpureum in the pearl millet breeding program. Production of monoploid gametes by the allohexaploids appeared to be genetically controlled.  相似文献
